Enduring Love by Richard Jones

Mattie and Red are attacked by an outlaw and finally work their way out of a dangerous situation, but what happens next? Well, here it is?

Excerpt:
“What was that?” Mattie shouted as she took refuge behind
Red.
“Trouble,” Red said calmly as he instinctively slipped the thong
from his Colt.
“That’s Billy Phipps,” Phil explained. “He works on one of the
ranches nearby and likes to shoot up the town when he’s drunk.”
“The Sheriff just lets him do it?” Red stated in disbelief.
“We don’t have a sheriff,” Phil replied. “Billy ran him off about
a month ago.”
Red looked down at Mattie and she knew immediately what he
was thinking. “This isn’t our fight, Red,” she said her voice filled
with worry.
“The law is everyone’s fight,” he said to her. “Otherwise, there
is no law.”
He started for the door, but Mattie quickly grabbed his arm.
“Don’t go,” she pleaded.
Red gently removed her hand then leaned down and kissed her
on the cheek. “I have to,” he said simply.
Mattie fought back her tears as she watched him walk out into
the bright sun. “If you get yourself killed, Red Holden,” she cried
fiercely, “I’ll never speak to you again.”
Red turned back briefly to give her a confident smile then
stepped into the dusty street and started for Billy.
“You the new Sheriff?” Billy called when his eyes finally focused
on Red.
He was tall and slender with the fuzz of a boy not yet twenty
on his cheeks and chin. There was a six gun in right hand as he
stood alone in the middle of the street.

Dangerous Seduction by Richard Jones

I wrote this on a whim. I was thinking of writing a serious historical romance, but a lighthearted look at medievel England seemed to be much more fun. Enjoy!

Elizabeth‘s anger was growing. “Can you not see, father?” she
pleaded. “He is an arrogant, insolent oaf who flaunts authority
even from his prison cell.”
William shook his head at Galen. “Are you all those things,
lad?” he asked.
Page 13
Dangerous Seduction
“I am, sire,” Galen confessed with no remorse. “And much
more. The poor monks who raised me were constantly vexed by
my attitude.”
“There, he admits it!” Elizabeth exclaimed. “What better reason
to place him in the dungeon?”
William shook his head. “I am sorry, Elizabeth,” he said between
chuckles. “If I were to jail every arrogant, insolent man in
my realm I would have to build a new dungeon which is something
I cannot afford to do.”
“Then you will set him free?” Her question displayed total
bewilderment.
“I have no choice.”
Elizabeth stared at the two men with fire in her eyes then,
lifting her skirt above the muck, she stomped out of the cell and
down the corridor.
William finally exploded into laughter that lasted for some
time.
“Come with me, lad,” William said once he had regained control.
“We will have a late meal and discuss your shortcomings.”
They walked out into the corridor and headed toward the
stairs.
“She has a very bad temper, sire,” Galen observed.
“So does her mother,” William conceded. “With two such
women constantly at my side, I often wonder who truly rules this
realm.”
They continued to walk in silence until they reached the stairs.
“She threatened to have you put my head on a pike,” Galen
offered.
“She threatens that a lot, lad, but I have yet to indulge her,”
William said. “You could be the first.”

Enduring Love by Richard Jones

This is a sequel to Mountain Romance. People (mostly relatives) were begging to find out what happened to Mattie and Red so here it is.

Excerpt:
She stopped abruptly as they both heard the sound of a branch
cracking in the woods. It could only mean someone was approaching
their camp.
Mattie pulled out the gun she always kept close to hand and
they waited. It seemed like an eternity before she spied two men
shuffling toward them. In an instant she recognized one as Little
Wolf and without a thought she dropped the gun then ran toward
them.
Kena quickly followed and they were almost upon them when
both women recognized the other as Red. He was limping and
leaned heavily on the old man dragging his left leg which was covered
with blood.
“What happened?” Mattie screamed.
“Bear,” Little Wolf replied simply.
“It’s not as bad as it looks,” Red stated gamely.
“Liar,” Mattie said slipping under Red’s other arm to take some
weight off the old man. “Let’s get you into the cabin,” she said
struggling to control her mounting fear.
With the help of all three, they managed to get Red onto his
blanket and start a fire to warm the cabin.
“Whiskey?” Little Wolf asked as the women began to examine
Red’s wounds in the light of the fire.
“We have no whiskey,” Mattie replied thinking the old man
wanted a drink.
“In my saddle bags,” Red managed to say.
Kena found the whiskey and swiftly returned.
“Bear claws dirty,” the old man told them. “Whiskey to clean
wounds.”

Mountain Romance by Richard Jones

This is my first novella and I cannot tell you how surprised and happy I was when Eternal Press accepted it for publication. After all, I'd only been writing for a mere 39 years before before it happened.

Excerpt:
In a wild panic, Logan began to shoot around the camp until his gun
was empty. The silence that followed seemed to lift Logan’s spirits. He
picked up his knife and knelt beside his captive. “Now where was I?”
“You can only kill me once,” the voice returned.
Logan dropped the knife and pulled his gun. He pulled the trigger
twice before he realized the gun was empty. “Show yourself!” he
demanded.
“There’s nothing to show,” the voice said calmly. “Remember, you
killed me.”
Logan pulled cartridges from his belt and tried to reload the gun, but
his hands were shaking too badly.
“Leave the woman,” the voice said.
Logan was so frightened he began to fire the empty gun again. “Show
yourself!” he screamed.
“Leave the woman,” the voice repeated. “Or join me in hell.”
That was enough for Logan. He picked up his knife, holstered his gun
and quickly saddled his horse. Then he sped off into the night without a
word to his captive.
Mattie listened until the hoof beats disappeared into the night. “Are
you going to show yourself or just leave me like this?” she asked the
darkness.

Enduring Love by Richard Jones

A sequel to Mountain Romance. I think I might have ended my first novella a little abruptly so here's a little more about Red and Mattie's adventure.

Excerpt:
Red said not a word as he continued slowly down the street.
“You deaf or something?” Billy yelled. “Answer me!”
Red was in no mood for conversation and kept moving.
“It’s your funeral, friend,” Billy said as he tried to steady his
pistol for a shot.
Without missing a step, Red drew his Colt and fired a shot that
just missed the toe of Billy’s right foot.
Billy was so surprised he stumbled back and almost fell to the
ground. “Try aiming next time,” he said with a drunken laugh as
he raised his pistol to try another shot.
Red was getting ever closer and fired again coming so near to
Billy’s left ear that the heat of the bullet singed Billy’s skin.
“Are you crazy or just drunk?!” Billy screamed. “You almost
took my ear off.”
Red finally stopped walking and fired his third shot aiming
to ricochet the bullet off Billy’s ornate belt buckle. It was a perfect
shot and sent Billy to the ground with no serious wound, but
struggling to breathe.
Red covered the last few yards to Billy in a trot and stood over
him with his Colt ready, but there was no need. Billy was laid out
gasping for every breath. Taking no chances, Red kicked the pistol
away from Billy’s hand then holstered his Colt and waited for the
young man to recover.

Dangerous Seduction by Richard Jones

Here's a review and brief excert for Dangerous Seduction. Enjoy!

Review:
Lady Elizabeth Halston is the only child of Baron William Halston. She is a very willful young woman who is in danger from someone within Halston Castle.

Galen was orphaned at a young age and was educated in the monastery. He stumbles across a situation that will change his life’s path.

Galen finds Lady Elizabeth tied up and at the mercy of two ruffians. Overhearing the men’s dilemma, Galen saves Elizabeth and returns her to the Baron where Elizabeth has Galen promptly imprisoned. Recognizing his daughter’s pettiness, the Baron enlists Galen’s help in protecting his daughter from the nobleman who is out to cause her harm.

I was not overly fond of Elizabeth when I first met her. Her childish behavior was a bit off-putting. Then, I read on. Elizabeth plays a role contingent upon whoever she is with at the moment. I discovered her to be a delightful character with great strength and intelligence. The humor of the various dialogues had me chuckling with each turn of the page. This is quite a lovely read with elements to surprise the reader along the way.

Excerpt:
She abandoned any hope of decorum as his hands began to explore
her body. They seemed to be everywhere at once exciting her
with a passion she had never known. Who knows how far it might
have gone had Galen not pushed her away as he surrendered to
the effects of his fight and fell to the floor in a swoon.
Galen awoke hours later with a start. It took some time for his
eyes to focus before he spied Lady Elizabeth sitting in a nearby
chair.

Dangerous Seduction by Richard Jones

Knights in armor, damsels in distress, action, adventure and of course romance.

Excerpt:
Egan was about to reply when a sudden sound startled him
“Pardon me,” the voice said from behind them.
The two men struggled to stand, but in his haste to rise, Egan
tripped over Reg’s foot and they both fell back to the ground with
a thud.
They looked up from where they sat on the grass to see a tall,
lean young man, dressed much like themselves but with a bow
hanging from his shoulder and a quiver of arrows strapped to his
back.
“I did not mean to frighten you,” the stranger said, looking
down on them. On his chiseled face was a mixture of curiosity
and concern. His expression seemed to anger the two brigands.
Reg and Egan scrambled to their feet.
“There is no one frightened here, laddie,” Reg brushed grass
from his rump. “Who are you to be sneaking around and interrupting
our business?”
“My name is Galen,” the young man said. He offered them a
friendly smile. “I was wondering about the young lady sitting under
that oak.”
“Well, wonder no more, lad,” Reg said firmly. “The lady is with
us.”
Galen studied the girl for a few moments as she stared daggers
back at the three of them. “Judging by the ropes that bind her,
I would say she was a very willing companion.” His words held
more than a hint of sarcasm. “Or could I be wrong?”
“Willing or not, she is with us,” Reg declared. Egan quickly
nodded his agreement. “So be on your way or suffer a beating you
will not soon forget.” He drew his fists up ready to do battle. Egan
reluctantly joined him. “What is it to be, lad?”
In the instant it took Reg to draw back his right fist for a blow,
Galen slipped the bow from his shoulder and snapped the tip
against Reg’s ear.
Reg screamed in pain as he grabbed his wounded ear and fell
writhing to the grass howling like a stray hound.
Egan looked down at his injured companion, shocked how easily
he had been dispatched by the young stranger. It was a mistake
for which he would pay in pain of his own.

Mountain Romance by Richard Jones

There was a time when westerns dominated the TV screen. Now it's reality shows. I can't decide whether or not that's progress.

Excerpt:
“I told you I didn’t want to stay at the fort,” Mattie said.
“So you claimed to be my wife thinking I’d be forced to take you with
me,” Red countered.
“Either that or leave you in the guardhouse.”
“There had to be another way.”
“Like what?”
“Like telling the truth.”
“The truth was much more complicated and might’ve put us both in
the guardhouse,” Mattie said. “Why not just accept the fact you’re stuck
with me?”
Red wasn’t ready to admit anything, but his options were limited.
The more he thought about it, the more he realized any solution would
involve a delay he could not afford. The only practical solution was to
leave her alone on the prairie, but that was something he could never
bring himself to do.
“You could leave me alone on the prairie,” Mattie offered, as if
reading his mind. “I survived before and I can do it again. Just give me a
few supplies and point me in the direction of the nearest town.”
“Don’t tempt me.”
Mattie shook her head. “Tell me something, Mr. Holden,” she said.
“Do you hate all women or is it just me?”
Red sighed. “I don’t hate anyone, ma’am. I just think women have
their place and that place is not on a mountain top in the dead of
winter.”

Mountain Romance

Mountain Romance is a love story set in the Old West. It has all the elements of a good western with action, adventure and even a little lust.

Mattie Sharp is a naive New England girl who is convinced she's in love with a drifting cowboy named Red Holden. But can she tell the difference between love and gratitude? After all, Red rescued her from a horrible death on the lonely prairie.
Red has never known love and is more than a little confused by her attentions. He wants only to be well rid of her.

Will this tale have a happy ending? Find out in Mountain Romance. Try this excerpt first.

"I don't need any help," Mattie told him.

"Never thought you did, ma'am," he said as once again he lifted her in his strong arms. But this time he hesitated before putting her onto the Appaloosa's back and looked into her soft eyes.

Mattie could feel her body warming to his touch and her heart beating wildly in her chest. Whether it be fear, exhaustion or confusion she didn't know, but she felt safe in his arms. Safer than she'd felt in a very long time. A moment later, Red gently placed her onto the horse and walked quietly to his Mustang.

Happy Holidays!!

It's hard to believe Thanksgiving will be on us in a few days then Christmas. Where did 2010 go? Speaking for myself. it went mostly in working, writing, editing and promoting. I'm looking forward to some down time now sleeping on the sofa with the sounds of college and pro football dancing in my ears. I might even open an eye now and then to see who's winning.

Ya'll take care and keep reading.
