This is my first novella and I cannot tell you how surprised and happy I was when Eternal Press accepted it for publication. After all, I'd only been writing for a mere 39 years before before it happened.
Excerpt:
In a wild panic, Logan began to shoot around the camp until his gun
was empty. The silence that followed seemed to lift Logan’s spirits. He
picked up his knife and knelt beside his captive. “Now where was I?”
“You can only kill me once,” the voice returned.
Logan dropped the knife and pulled his gun. He pulled the trigger
twice before he realized the gun was empty. “Show yourself!” he
demanded.
“There’s nothing to show,” the voice said calmly. “Remember, you
killed me.”
Logan pulled cartridges from his belt and tried to reload the gun, but
his hands were shaking too badly.
“Leave the woman,” the voice said.
Logan was so frightened he began to fire the empty gun again. “Show
yourself!” he screamed.
“Leave the woman,” the voice repeated. “Or join me in hell.”
That was enough for Logan. He picked up his knife, holstered his gun
and quickly saddled his horse. Then he sped off into the night without a
word to his captive.
Mattie listened until the hoof beats disappeared into the night. “Are
you going to show yourself or just leave me like this?” she asked the
darkness.
