Mattie and Red are attacked by an outlaw and finally work their way out of a dangerous situation, but what happens next? Well, here it is?
Excerpt:
“What was that?” Mattie shouted as she took refuge behind
Red.
“Trouble,” Red said calmly as he instinctively slipped the thong
from his Colt.
“That’s Billy Phipps,” Phil explained. “He works on one of the
ranches nearby and likes to shoot up the town when he’s drunk.”
“The Sheriff just lets him do it?” Red stated in disbelief.
“We don’t have a sheriff,” Phil replied. “Billy ran him off about
a month ago.”
Red looked down at Mattie and she knew immediately what he
was thinking. “This isn’t our fight, Red,” she said her voice filled
with worry.
“The law is everyone’s fight,” he said to her. “Otherwise, there
is no law.”
He started for the door, but Mattie quickly grabbed his arm.
“Don’t go,” she pleaded.
Red gently removed her hand then leaned down and kissed her
on the cheek. “I have to,” he said simply.
Mattie fought back her tears as she watched him walk out into
the bright sun. “If you get yourself killed, Red Holden,” she cried
fiercely, “I’ll never speak to you again.”
Red turned back briefly to give her a confident smile then
stepped into the dusty street and started for Billy.
“You the new Sheriff?” Billy called when his eyes finally focused
on Red.
He was tall and slender with the fuzz of a boy not yet twenty
on his cheeks and chin. There was a six gun in right hand as he
stood alone in the middle of the street.
